This is an example of when Facebook works well.
Through Facebook, I network with (and contribute to) an amazing group through social media known as the Boulevard of Midlife Bloggers. While I’m slowly, but slowly accepting that I’m moving into this stage of life – gracefully mind you – it’s been nice to connect with like-minded souls of a more mature persuasion.
In this group, many are transitioning to a stage in life where caring for loved ones focuses on more than just child rearing. It may also include aging parents. To that end, the Boulevard of Midlife Women are helping to spread awareness for this important campaign.
Random Acts of Kindness for Caregivers
November was National Family Caregivers month. November might be over, but the campaign is still in session. The Random Acts of Kindness initiative aims to recognize and support the 40 million unpaid caregivers in the U.S. Many caregivers are boomer women, often sandwiched between the needs of their parents and their own kids.
A popular misconception is that caregivers are paid medical professionals, providing full-time care to someone in need of daily help, when in reality, most caregivers are family members or friends who are also working and managing their own families at the same time. For many, the caregiving role starts with simple things like scheduling a doctor’s visit or helping with daily errands, but gradually expands over time, until it becomes a major commitment in their lives.
How can you help?
November has seen the kick-off for a program designed to encouraging all Americans to perform an unexpected ‘Random Act of Kindness’ for a caregiver. By starting a nationwide movement, we’ll raise awareness of caregiving and caregivers while at the same time reaching caregivers directly—helping to alleviate some of their daily stresses and reward them for their ongoing support.
The Ask Is Simple
- Identify a caregiver in your life or community and do something nice for them. It doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.
- Share their story with AARP. Submit a brief summary of their caregiving experience (150 words or less) and a photo showing how you made the caregiver feel special. All entries are entered to win $10,000.
- If you win the big prize, do something REALLY special for your friend!!!
Whether you win the big prize or not, this initiative is a win-win. Let’s remember the unsung heroes/heroins in our lives and share their goodness with the world.
Let’s start now and get the ideas flowing. What caregivers come to mind? Who would you lavish with a random act of kindness?
